Bala Kanda: Where the Journey of Maryada Purushottama Begins
The birth of Rama, his extraordinary strength, his kindness toward everyone, his popularity among the people, his patience, gentle nature, and unwavering commitment to truth are among the qualities celebrated in his story.
This verse is particularly beautiful for an article because it presents Rama not merely as a powerful warrior but as a person whose greatness comes from strength combined with compassion, patience, gentleness, and truthfulness.
Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana and guided by the sage Vishvamitra, travelled onward and reached the place where King Janaka's sacred sacrifice was being performed.
This verse marks an important stage in Rama’s youthful journey. He is no longer simply the prince of Ayodhya. Under Vishvamitra’s guidance, he begins encountering situations that reveal his courage, discipline, and sense of duty.
Having heard King Janaka’s words, the great sage Vishvamitra said to him, “Show the bow to Rama.”
This moment leads to one of the most celebrated episodes of Bala Kanda. Rama is shown the mighty bow associated with Shiva, which powerful kings had been unable to handle. Rama eventually lifts and breaks it, demonstrating his extraordinary strength and fulfilling the condition connected with Sita’s marriage.
“O heroic Rama, son of Dasharatha, I have heard of your extraordinary strength and have heard in detail about your breaking of the great bow.”
This verse is spoken by Parashurama, who has heard about Rama’s remarkable achievement. It introduces another important moment in Bala Kanda, where Rama’s strength and spiritual stature are tested.
