The Holiest Forms of Lord Shiva The 12 Jyotirlingas are among the most sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and hold immense significance in Hinduism. The word "Jyotirlinga" comes from the Sanskrit words jyoti (divine light) and linga (the symbolic form of Lord Shiva), meaning the "Linga of Eternal Divine Light." According to the Shiva Purana , the Jyotirlingas originated when Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite pillar of light to demonstrate His boundless nature before Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu.
