Duty, Dharma and the Soul: The Deeper Wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita

Image
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन। मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥ You have the right to perform your duty, but you do not have control over the results. Do not make the result the only reason for your actions, and do not become attached to avoiding action. This is probably the most widely quoted verse of the Bhagavad Gita . It teaches that we should concentrate on doing our duty sincerely rather than becoming obsessed with the outcome. Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, I manifest Myself, O Arjuna. I appear to protect the righteous, destroy destructive forces, and re-establish Dharma. I manifest age after age. Together, these two verses express the important idea of divine intervention for the restoration of Dharma . न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्... The true Self is never born and nev...

Image
Bhagavad Gita vs. Srimad Bhagavatam The rich tapestry of Hinduism boasts many sacred texts and two that often cause confusion are the  Bhagavad Gita  and the Srimad Bhagavatam. While both hold immense importance and explore themes of devotion and spirituality, they are distinct works. Let's unravel the key differences: 1. Form and Origin: Bhagavad Gita:  A concise dialogue of 700 verses, nestled within the epic Mahabharata. It's a conversation between the warrior prince Arjuna and his charioteer, Lord Krishna, who reveals profound wisdom on dharma (righteous duty), karma (action), and attaining liberation. Srimad Bhagavatam:  A vast Purana, a category of ancient scriptures known for their stories and legends. The Bhagavatam, also called the Bhagavata Purana, is much longer, with 12 skandhas containing around 18,000 verses. It chronicles the pastimes of Lord Vishnu and his avatars, with a significant focus on Krishna. 2. Narrative Focus: Bhagavad Gita:  Fo...

Janmashtami: The Celebration of Lord Krishna's Birth

Image
Janmashtami is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu holidays, holding special significance for followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. In this tradition, Lord Krishna is revered as both the source and ultimate form of the Divine, worshipped through the practice of bhakti yoga, the yoga of loving devotion. Other Hindu traditions regard Krishna as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu . According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, a sacred text recounting the life and deeds of Krishna, the story of his birth begins with a plea from Bhumi, the Earth Goddess, to Brahma, the Architect of the Universe. Bhumi lamented the Earth's plight, overrun by malevolent kings who oppressed their subjects through greed and corruption. Touched by her distress, Brahma approached Vishnu, a manifestation of the Divine as the Preserver and Protector of the Universe in many Hindu beliefs, and regarded as an expansion of Krishna by Gaudiya Vaishnavas. Responding to Brahma's plea, Vishnu, in the form of Krishna, declared ...

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita - A Textbook of Morality

Image
Hinduism has three epics: the  Shrimad Bhagavad Gita ,  the Upanishads, and the Brahmasutras. The Gita itself contains information on the significance of the final two. Because of this, the Gita can be compared to an expressway and the rest of the scriptures as a road. It is both a mantra and a shraddha-sutra because it is a conversation between Lord Krishna and himself. Can anyone ever fathom that Arjun was given this heavenly, supernatural account by the all-powerful Lord Shri Krishna roughly 5100 years ago, in the middle of millions of warriors from both armies who were preparing to fight in the Mahabharata war, on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Most enigmatic, weird, and unfathomable!
