Tanjore Painting : Art of the Gods


This is a blog about Tanjore paintings. It discusses the history, technique, and materials of Tanjore painting. Tanjore paintings are a form of South Indian visual art that began in Tanjore in the 16th century. They are characterized by their depiction of Hindu deities, bright colors, iconic compositions, architectural framing, gold foil, inlays of beads and precious or semi-precious gems, gesso undercoat, and painted on wooden planks.

               Traditionally,  Ramayana  is considered older. But here's why some argue  Mahabharata  might be earlier: Panini's grammar mentions Mahabharata characters  like Arjuna and Yudhisthira, but not Ramayana characters.
